This is part 2 of the 3 part video series on probiotics. I want to expand on what we talked about in video one which was multi-floral probiotic supplements. As a recap, a multi-floral probiotic provides overall digestive support in the form of a variety of strains of probiotic. The Probiotic Support Formula and Therbiotic Complete are two forms of multi-floral probiotic supplements that I mentioned. Then I also talked about the use of a probiotic called Culturelle. Culturelle is a probiotic that is more target specific, meaning it is used to address a specific issue that the individual is dealing with. Culturelle is a probiotic called acidophilus GG which targets a certain strain of bacteria in the gut called clostridia. Another specific probiotic that is used commonly for children with Autism is called VSL #3.
VSL #3 has been used in the past, and still is, for people suffering from both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. VSL #3 contains 8 different forms of lactic acid bacteria which means that is it a very potent probiotic. And in addition to helping people who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, it also aids in treatment for people with high oxalates. Oxalates can be found in many foods and are organic compounds. What happens is that oxalates form crystals by binding with minerals and complexing with heavy metals. Once that happens they can end up in the person's joints, nervous system or muscle tissue. When a person is susceptible to high oxalate absorption, that sets them up for the possibility of a predisposition to kidney stones in the future. With VSL #3, the oxalates are degraded and not fully absorbed in the digestive tract and VSL #3 binds with them. So for sufferers of inflammatory bowel disease and also oxalate issues, VSL #3 can be a very useful probiotic.
In my 3rd video of this series I will go more in-depth and talk about other probiotics that function as treatment specific probiotics. I will cover yeast fighting probiotics in addition to a couple of other forms of probiotics that fight against bacterial issues.
